Research in digestive diseases in some ways has never offered more excitement and promise. The ideas and technological tools available to research have never been more enticing, and investigators are on the cusp of breakthroughs in many disease areas. However, these are also difficult times for researchers in gastroenterology, particularly young researchers, as resources to support the investigative mission have become somewhat scarcer largely because of the marked slowdown in government funding.
