Chronic hepatitis C (CHC) infection is a global epidemic with nearly 200 million people infected worldwide, and is one of the leading indications for liver transplantation. Although acute exacerbation of chronic hepatitis B (defined as an intermittent increase of alanine aminotransferase [ALT] levels to >10 times the upper limit of normal and >2 times the baseline value) is well characterized, little is known about acute exacerbation among patients with CHC (ae-CHC).
