Laboratory diagnosis of Legionella pneumophila infectionsin patients with pneumonia is based on culture, serologicaltesting, molecular testing and detection of solubleL. pneumophila antigen in urine.1 Since we published ourreview of diagnostic approaches to Legionnaires’ disease(LD)1 a number of new urinary antigen assays have becomeavailable. LD is an acute pneumonia caused by Legionellaspp., which are non-spore-forming Gramnegativerods. L. pneumophila serogroup 1 accounts formore than 90% of human infections and is the most importantetiological agent of LD.1,2 Other species are rarelyfound as the causative agent of LD with an exception forLegionella longbeachae. In Australia and New Zealand L.longbeachae is responsible for approximately 30% of thecases of LD.3
