Mumps among highly vaccinated people: Investigation of an outbreak in a French Military Parachuting Unit, 2013

We recently reported in this journal data arising from the 2010-2011 measles outbreak in the French armed forces. During this outbreak, which followed the same pattern as that observed at European level, a mass vaccination campaign with Mumps/Measles/Rubella vaccine (MMR) was implemented (nearly 200,000 doses distributed to military personnel). As observed for measles, a resurgence of mumps could be expected in industrialized countries. Hence, mumps outbreaks among vaccinated young adults have recently been described in Europe and the USA. Mumps are one of the 62 health events monitored among French active military personnel by the French Army Center for Epidemiology and Public Health (CESPA). Following the report in April 2013 of several cases among a section of young recruits stationed in a parachuting unit in southwestern France, an outbreak investigation was initiated that is presented in this article.
