A Model of Organisational Knowledge Management MaturityBased on People, Process, and Technology

Organisations are increasingly investing inknowledge management (KM) initiatives to promote the shar-ing, application, and creation of knowledge for competitiveadvantage. To guide and assess the progress of KM initiativesin organisations, various process models have been proposedbut a consistent approach that has been empirically testedis lacking. Based on the life cycle theory, this paper reviews,compares, and integrates existing models to propose a GeneralKM Maturity Model (G-KMMM). G-KMMM encompasses theinitial, aware, defined, managed, and optimising stages, whichare differentiated in terms of their characteristics related tothe people, process, and technology aspects of KM. To facil-itate empirical validation and application, an accompanyingassessment tool is also developed. As an initial validation ofthe proposed G-KMMM, a case study of a multi-unit infor-mation system organisation of a large public university wasconducted. Findings indicate that G-KMMM can be a usefuldiagnostic tool for assessing and guiding KM implementationin organisations.
