This was the first article published by ALSPAC using dietary records rather than questionnaires. Although untrained, parents coped well with completing these structured diet diaries and any detail left out of the diary was filled in during a short face-to-face interview by one of the nutrition team members at a clinic session. The clinic sessions collected a wide range of other measures from the child including growth measures and blood samples. It was important to establish in this article that the dietary data collected were comparable with those collected from similar aged children in a national survey using weighed diet records and this was achieved.
