So many rumors have been floating in the Asian Pacific market about FY2006 contract settlements that both Australian coal and Japanese steel officials have taken the extreme measure of breaking silence to renounce the rumors as false. As mentioned in the last issue of Coal Americas, negotiations for hard met coal aren't expected to enter a serious stage until early February. BHP Billiton (which will probably do the heavy lifting in the negotiations), Elk Valley Coal, Xstrata and other major exporters aren't scheduled to arrive in Tokyo before the last week of January.
