Thermal Coal

After an extremely quiet period leading up to the New Year, prices on the European thermal coal market began to trend up by an average $2 to $3 dollars per tonne last week. The uptick in prices is partially due to the supply situation in Colombia. Heavy rains are causing export shipments from the Cesar department to be delayed by one to two weeks. This includes two of Colombia's major thermal coal exporters - Drummbnd and Prodeco. The country's largest exporter, Cerrejon, is faring better with delays of only two to three days.
