Progress Fuels is interested in expanding the role of imported coal at the Crystal River power plant in Florida, sources tell Coal Americas. Crystal River enjoys favorable water rates and wants to maximize the amount of coal it receives by water, from domestic and imported sources through New Orleans for shipment to Florida. Utilities in Florida probably won't be required to install scrubbers at power plants before 2010 or 2011, so compliance coal will continue to be an attractive option for the Crystal River plant. Beyond 2011, all units at Crystal River might not be outfitted with scrubbers. At this point Progress Fuels isn't certain.
