Latin American coal exports will play significant role in Atlantic Basin, U.S. markets in the future

Increased coal exports from Colombia and Venezuela will be a primary contributor to supply in the Atlantic Basin and U.S. regions in the future, Jaime Correal, a senior consultant at Hill & Associates, told those in attendance at the CoalTrans Conference in Aruba. "Latin American exports have steadily grown by 27,8 million tonnes in the period between 1997 and 2004, led by Colombian expansions at the Drummond and Cerrejon operations," Correal said. "Colombia has a highly consolidated coal industry with 96 percent of coal exports made by three companies, Cerrejon coal, Drummond and Glencore."
