With demand for imported coal set to explode in the U.S. during the next 10 years, developing port facilities to handle the influx is absolutely essential. Analysts often mention the Pier IX and Dominion Terminal in Hampton Roads and the Shipyard River Terminal in Charleston as major sites for coal import facilities on the U.S. East Coast, and with good reason. It's a natural fit. All of the terminals were originally designed to export coal back when the U.S. had ample volume to export around the world. With production in Central Appalachia quickly dwindling and U.S. power plants clamoring for the opportunity to burn imported coal, the switch by existing coal terminals to import facilities makes good business sense. New facilities will also be needed; however, if the U.S. is to realize its full potential as a major coal importer. Coal Americas decided to survey three ports on the eastern seaboard that aren't often mentioned on the "A list" for developing coal import facilities, and the survey results indicate that the ports realize the earnings potential from imported coal.
