Colombia: Rail agreement could boost exports in Cesar region to 85-5 million tonnes/year

A rail agreement that could boost Colombian coal exports in the Cesar region to 65.5 million tonnes/year by 2010, (from a current 26 million tonnes/year), was signed by the Colombian government and a number of coal producers March 28, sources tell Coal Americas. Under the agreement, six coal producers in the Cesar region - Drummond, Prodeco, Carbones de la Jagua, Carbones del Cesar, C.I. Carbones del Ca-ribe and Consorcio Minero Unido - will acquire the shares of Fenoco, the company that currently operates and oversees the rail concession from Cesar to Santa Marta. The new ownership will enable the rail expansion project to gain funding.
