U.S. East Coast: Outlook for imported coal takes an interesting turn

Kinder Morgan Energy Partners (KMEP) will invest dollar 70 million to expand the Pier IX bulk terminal in Newport News, Virginia. The decision came after KMEP and Drummond Coal Sales signed a long-term agreement that will enable Drummond to bring up to 9.0 million tons/year of imported coal through Pier IX. The project will include the construction of a new dock and installation of equipment that will increase throughput at Pier IX by up to 30 percent. Completion of the project is tentatively scheduled for the first quarter of 2008.
