The Coal Age staff sighs with relief when summer arrives. Yes, everyone likes warm weather, but it's more than that. At the beginning of the year, we take on a little added responsibility organizing and promoting the technical programs for two trade shows-Coal Prep and Longwall USA. That work builds to a crescendo toward the end of spring. Then, we harvest the rewards, which usually amounts to a trip to the show for the staff and a chance to meet some of the true coal industry leaders.Although both shows reach different segments of the Coal Age audience, they are similar in the fact that they both deliver excellent technical programs. This is a direct result of the fact that both are steered by committees composed of industry professionals. Coal Prep takes place the first week of May each year and provides a forum for prep plant managers and operators. Taking place every two years in June, Longwall USA brings together engineers and managers who specialize in longwall mining, a highly productive form of underground mining. So during the odd numbered years, the Coal Age staff works a little harder.
