In the present study, we assessed the relation between diastolic dysfunction (measured by technetium-99mradionuclide ventriculography) and serum levels of myocardial fibrosis markers (amino-terminal propeptides of type I and III procollagen; PINP and PIIINP) in hypertensive patients without diabetes mellitus. Patients with abnormal PINP level (> 53 mug/l) had significantly lower left ventricular peak filling rate (PFR) and shorter time to PFR than patients with normal PINP level (<= 53 mug/l). Elevated serum PINP level reflected diastolic dysfunction in hypertensive patients without diabetes.
