A new middle-eocene marine percoid (Perciformes, Percoidei) from the Northern Caucasus

A new genus and species of percoid fishes, Svnagropoides steparenkomm, from the middle Eocene (Barton, Kuma horizon) of the Northern Caucasus is described. This fish is characterized by widely separated dorsal fins and large cycloid scales, and, based on the external similarity with the existing Synagmps, it was ascribed to the family Acropomatide. Unlike this genus, Synagropoides gen. nov has a smaller number of spines in the first dorsal fin, no fangs in jaws, its praeoperculum is less denticulated, and the ceratohyale has no hole. It is suggested that the new fish species was mesopelagic.
