The African hillstream catfishes (Amphiliidae) of southwestern Ethiopia: the first report of the genus Phracturafrom the Nile basin

This report documents the discovery of the amphiliid catfish of the genus Phractura at two localities in the tributaries of the White Nile in southwestern Ethiopia. Morphology of these catfish in comparison with another amphiliid genus Andersonia from the same basin and other Phractura species is studied. In particular, we describe the jaw dentition in the Nilotic Phractura, a character which is poorly studied in the other species of the genus. Taxonomic status of the newly recorded Phractura populations and biogeographic aspects of the discovery of this genus in the Nile system are considered.
