A new species of eelpouts, Gymnelopsis humilis sp. nov. (Zoarcidae), from the northern part of the Sea of Okhotsk

From the northern part of the Sea of Okhotsk, a new species of the genus Gymnelopsis, Gymnelopsis humilis sp. nova, is described. From the other species of the genus, it differs in a shallow elongate body (5.7-6.0 percent of TL), long (with respect to eye) snout, and a dark band on the body along the dorsal fin base. The new species is characterized by the following characters: vertebrae 109; D + 1/2 C 100-101; dorsal fin begins midway between the end of P and the beginning of A (antedorsal distance27.0 percent of TL); snout is slightly shorter than the longitudinal eye diameter (20.6-22.4 percent) of lc); infraorbital and supratemporal pores not reduced; preoperculo-mandibular pores seven; gill opening 15.6-18.8 percent of lc, extending downwardto the middle of the base (or to the seventh ray) of P; pectoral fin 42.0-48.0 percent of lc; scales cover the posterior part of the body. It was found at depths of about 153 m, at negative near-bottom temperatures.
