A New Species of Snailfishes (Liparidae) Paraliparis vaillanti sp. nova from the Northwestern Atlantic, with the Redescription of a Rare Species Paraliparis edwardsi Vaillant

A new species of snailfishes Paraliparis vaillanti sp. nova was described from the northwestern Atlantic, the Laurentia Channel (46°39' N, 58°51' W), A representative of the species was caught in the mid-water at a horizon of 423 m over a depth of 1 1.50 m. Based on the external structure of the pectoral fin with its lower lobe totally isolated from the upper lobe, the specimen was similar to P. calidus and P. garmani from the western Atlantic and P. hystrix and P. edwardsi from the eastern Atlantic . However, it differed from these species by the presence of a horizontal mouth (vs, slanting mouth), pale coloration, and other characters. The diagnostic characters of the holotype of a rare species P. edwardsi (Vaillant, 1888) were specified based on the single specimen collected off the coast of Morocco (33°46' N, 9°02' W) at a depth of 1319 m.
