On October 1, 1998, United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan launched the proclamation of the International Day of Older Persons. Subsequently, the United Nations General Assembly declared 1999 to be the International Year of Older Persons.The aim of the recognized year was to attract attention to the importance of humanity's demographic coming of age and the promise it holds for maturing attitudes and capabilities in social, economic, cultural, and spiritual undertakings, not least for global peace and development in the next century.
