Focal Activity in Early Phase Scan Should Not Be Ignored: Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor Detected on Tc-99m Pertechnetate Imaging

A 63-year-old man was hospitalized for recurrent painless gastrointestinal bleeding. Panendoscopy, double-balloon enteros-copy, and wireless capsule endoscopy showed no abnormal findings. A Tc-99m pertechnetate scan was performed to detect a Meckel diverticulum. The scintigraphy showed an abnormal vascular blush in the angiographic phase at the abdomen close to the left common iliac artery. Mesenteric arteriography showed a hypervascular mass over the left lower quadrant of the abdomen. Histologic examination confirmed a gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST).
