Atrial Metastasis of Esophageal Carcinoma Detected by Follow-up FDG PET/CT

Atrial metastases are extremely rare. We present the case of a 47-year-old woman diagnosed with esophageal carcinoma, treated with induction radio- and chemotherapy and surgical resection (Ro). On follow up with FDG-PET/CT for suspected progressive disease with metastasis to liver (segment V), high uptake was noted in the right atrium. Based on this the diagnosis of an atrial metastasis was made. Subsequent follow-up echocardiography was unable to confirm the atrial mass. The patient died because of progressive disease and concomitant lung disease. Autopsy and histology confirmed metastasis of the squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the esophagus.
