Evidence is accumulating that excessive dietary energy intake and a sedentary lifestyle renders the brain vulnerable to multiple age-related disorders, including stroke, Alzheimer's disease (AD), and Parkinsons disease (PD). As described below, advances in understanding the molecular and cellular mechanisms by which energy intake and expenditure affect neuronal vulnerability are leading to novel therapeutic interventions aimed at increasing the durability and resiliency of the brain during aging. Collectively, the leading age-related neurological disorders-AD, stroke, and PD-are responsible for more morbidity and mortality than cardiovascular disease and cancers.
