Epidermoid cyst of the soft palate in a 2-year-old: A case report and review of literature of pediatric soft palate lesions
The differential diagnosis of soft palate and uvular masses in children spans both benign and malignant possibilities, including epithelial and dermoid cysts, mucoceles, lipomas, branchial cleft cysts,terato-mas, minor salivary gland tumors, and rhabdomyo-sarcoma.Epidermoid cysts are benign and consist of a layer of squamous epithelium without adnexa. The origin of these cysts is unknown, although one hypothesis is that they develop from ectodermal debris during mid-line closure of embryogenesis.Epidermoid and dermoid cysts occur about 1.6% of the time in the oral cavity. In the soft palate and uvula, only 10 cases of epidermoid cysts and 1 case of a dermoid have been described in the pediatric population. " In this case, we present our experience with a 28-month-old who was found to have a symptomatic large epidermoid cyst of her right soft palate.
