Results of a mechanical spectroscopy characterization carried out on a composite material containing particles of the alloy Zr_(0.9)Ti_(0.1)Ni Mn_(0.5)Cr_(0.25)V_(0.25) inside a carbon-Teflon matrix are presented. Internal friction and modulus measurements were made using a sub-resonant torsion pendulum at a frequency of 2 Hz and in the temperature range (90-360) K. A sharp internal friction peak at 150 K and a shoulder at 275 K were found, corresponding modulus variations. Both effects are modified by the presence of hydrogen, showing a rapid decrease of peak height and modulus step in the course of thermal cycling and annealing. In addition metallurgical and electrochemical characterizations of the material were performed. The results are discussed in the light of the hydriding properties of the alloy particles, concluding that the effects detected are related to 0.1% of alloy hydriding.
