Correction

The paper presents new data that include estimates of biological production in cryoconite ecosystems. The lead author has found an error caused by conversion of these estimates from μgC L~(-1) d~(-1) (Fig. 6) to μgC g~(-1) t d~(-1) which affects Fig ure 7 and Tables 3 and 5. Therefore, whilst the initial values of production shown in Figure 6 are correct, and the message of the paper remains unchanged, readers need to be aware that the correct data for the biological production values normalized by mass are only available in the online version of this paper. The error does not influence the interpretation of these data because the ecosystem still displays a close balance between primary production and respiration, and the biomass accumulation is small relative to biomass removal by physical processes.
