Nearly a quarter of NHS band 6 pharmacist posts in the UK are vacant, with the rate as high as 40% in Scotland, according to latest figures. The "National NHS pharmacy staffing establishment and vacancy survey 2009", published last month, reveals that the 1,580 band 6 pharmacist posts (full-time equivalent), UK wide, are currently supported by only 667 preregistration trainee pharmacist positions. The retention rate for pharmacists who have registered following NHS training varies from 50% to 75%, the survey indicates.
