Forensic radiology is an extremely reliable identification tool. It is often, however, underutilized and underestimated as an identification science in our opinion, especially in comparison to identification modalities such as fingerprints, dental records, and DNA. Here we offer a perspective on the principles of forensic identification, emphasizing aspects of radiology that contribute to this legally and morally important process, and assert that forensic radiology is an equally valid (if not more appropriate in certain circumstances) identification modality. Specifically, we address the increased availability of radiologic reference material, the evidentiary value of radiologic features used in identification comparisons (as well as for investigative lead value), and suggest the implementation of quantitative approaches to further bolster the scientific reliability and statistical strength of radiologic identifications.
