The safe handling of bodies or other material is beyond the scope of this document. However the computed tomography (CT) scanner and staff must be integrated into the appropriate body handling protocols for a particular event. When the body is delivered to the scanner it must be placed on the scan table, ideally in an anatomic supine 'head-up' position. The body should be fixed in place using straps. PMCT may be performed without breaking the seal of a body bag. However, if additional procedures to enhance the CT scan are required access to the body is required. Manipulation of the body may be required, including pulling the arms into the side of the body, break down of rigor mortis or performing soft tissue or even bone release in cases of burning, to allow the body to fit through the scan aperture. Opening of the body bag or manipulation of the body should only be done if safe to do so and if directed by the lead investigator. All manipulations of the body should be recorded.
