Multidisciplinary approach helps patients to manage chronic pain

Unlike many pharmacists who have become specialist prescribers, I cannot claim to be a pioneer. Nevertheless, I believe my participation in the chronic pain team at City Hospitals Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust adds value to patient care.My involvement began late in 2006 when a senior colleague who had been working in the clinic as a supplementary prescriber left the hospital. This provided me with the opportunity to gain my own prescribing qualification under the supervision of a consultant mentor and, perhaps more importantly, a pair of pharmacist prescriber shoes to fill.
