Loss of hMSH2 gene expression correlates with improved survival in patients with sporadic colorectal cancer

A mismatch repair gene hMSH2 (human mutS homolog 2) is involved in the correction of mispairing during replication, and its mutation is associated with both microsatellite instability and hereditary colorectal cancer. We have also evaluated its involvement in sporadic colorectal cancer tumorigenesis. The expression of hMSH2 was analysed in 75 cases of sporadic colorectal cancer using RT-PCR. We observed the loss of hMSH2 gene expression in neoplastic tumours in about 40% of patients. Although there was no statistically significant difference between the loss of the hMSH2 gene expression and clinical parameters but our studies showed that the patients with the loss of hMSH2 gene expression had the tendency to longer survival in all Dukes' stages.
