MEMORIAL TO ADRIAAN C. VAN GINKEL (1931-2013)

Adrianus (Adriaan) Cornelis van Ginkel, a well-known specialist of fusulinid foraminifera, passed away on September 10, 2013, in Leiderdorp, Holland. Born in Wageningen on March 31, 1931, he was the son of Cornelis van Ginkel, the local veterinarian, and Margreta van Ginkel-Schouten. Throughout his primary and secondary school education in Wageningen, he showed a broad interest in any aspect of natural history. From 1950-1955 Adriaan studied geology at Leiden State University, where he received his undergraduate and M.Sc. degrees. His Master’s thesis dealt with the Carboniferous fusulinids and stratigraphy at the headwaters of the Pisuerga River, an area along the southern slope of the CantabrianMountains in northern Spain. That field work was his first contact with a region in which he developed close personal and professional ties that lasted for the rest of his life.
