Acute toxicity of microcystin-LR and its effects on blood parameters of a common carp, Cyprinus carpio (Linn.).

Cyanobacteria, a blue-green algae is a dominant phytoplanktonic group in eutrophic freshwater bodies. They produce cyanotoxin, which is harmful for fishes. Microcystin-LR was injected intraperitoneally (20 micro l of stock solution) to Cyprinus carpio. After 96 h of injection, fish were sacrificed for serum calcium, total serum protein, total blood cholesterol, ovarian cholesterol and testicular cholesterol. After 96 h of injection the level of serum calcium, total serum protein, ovarian cholesterol and testicular cholesterol were decrease, whereas the level of total blood cholesterol were decreased.
