The messenger RNA levels of CYP1A, ER alpha and p53 genes in whitefish larvae with signs of blue sac disease (BSD), which is thought to be due to exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, in Poland were investigated in May 2006 by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The results were compared with those of unaffected larvae. It was shown that the CYP1A mRNA levels were slightly higher in BSD larvae compared to normal ones but was not statistically significant. Unaffected larvae had higher expression levels of ER alpha mRNA but was also not significantly different to BSD larvae. However, p53 mRNA levels were significantly higher in BSD larvae compared to unaffected ones..
