Standard metabolic rate (SMR) corresponds to the minimum maintenance metabolism of a resting fish in a post-absorptive state while active metabolic rate (AMR) is the metabolic rate measured during swimming at maximum sustained speed. Both parametersand the critical oxygen saturation (Scrit) were measured in 64 fish, body weight 79-473 g and tail length 21-39 cm held at 5, 10 or 15degC. Smaller fish were used to measure SMR and the larger ones were used to measure AMR. SMR was 35.5, 57.0 and 78.2 mgO2 kg-1 h-1, while Scrit was 16.5, 23.2 and 30.3% at 5, 10 and 15deg, respectively; AMR was 146.6, 197.9 and 200.4 mg O2 kg-1 h-1 while the critical swimming speed was 1.6, 1.7 and 1.9, respectively. The SMR of Atlantic cod in the present study is low compared with previously published values for this species, at all temperatures examined; possible reasons for this are discussed.
