Essential oil Composition of Zingiber officinale Roscoe from Eastern Zimbabwe

Ginger, rhizomes from Zingiber officinale Roscoe, cultivated in Eastern Zimbabwe were collected, distilled for essential oil composition and subjected to GC and GC-MS analysis. One hundred and eleven (111) components accounting for 99.9% of total oil composition were identified and the essential oil was dominated by neral (10.6-12.5%), geranial (16.5-17.8%), camphene (3.6-10.1%), 1,8-cineole and beta-phellandrene (5.8-13.7%), limonene (4.7-6.6%), borneol (2.9-5.6%), zingiberene (3.0-9.9%), beta-sesquiphellandrene (1.4-5.0%), beta-bisabolene (1.6-4.3%) and ar-curcumene (1.4-3.8%). Due to its widespread use in the pharmaceutical, food, beverage and cosmetic industries, the identity of the local chemovarieties is essential for crop and product development.
