This article analyzes the determinants of youngmen and women's entry into parenthood, applying hazardregressions to a combination of longitudinal micro-datafrom the 1992/1993 Swedish Family Survey and aggregatetime-series data. We study the impact of education, labormarket attachment and macro-economic change onbecoming a parent for both men and women in Swedensince the mid-1960s. Our results show clear gender dif-ferences both when it comes to individual characteristicsand aggregate-level factors. Even though the effectssometimes differed according to gender, education andlabor market attachment were key factors determining thetransition to parenthood. Over time the pattern grewincreasingly similar for men and women.
