Navicular syndrome or navicular disease?

Navicular disease has been for many years a controversial lameness as far as cause and treatment. Diagnostic methods have been limited to radiographs of the navicular bone, and careful examination of variations in lucency of the bone were considered the best method of diagnosis for many years. As other methods and considerations came into play, a diagnosis of navicular disease became the most common diagnosis of obscure foot pain. As a result, the term navicular syndrome came into common use, indicating the common belief that a variety of pathologic conditions of the foot in the region of the navicular bone can cause the same symptoms.
