Sucralfate, also known by the trade name Carafate (Aventis, Bridgewater, NJ USA), is a basic aluminum salt of sucrose octasulphate commonly used in both human and veterinary medicine. Sucralfate is orally administered and has a local therapeutic effect within the gastrointestinal tract.1 Sucralfate is most efficacious in an acid environment, where in the presence of hydrochloric acid it forms a thick complex with the proteinaceous exudates found at the base of ulcerations.2 This insoluble complex forms a barrier at the site of action and protects against further damage caused by pepsin, bile salts, or acids.
