Commentary: The Cardiva Catalyst II device: a catalyzer of patient safety or a boomerang for the endovascular specialist?

Arterial puncture and sheath insertion using the modified Seldinger technique has become the standard method by which almost all endovascular procedures are performed.1 With improvements in techniques and devices, a significant number of patients with atherosclerotic disease are undergoing endovascular procedures. Indeed, ~7 million invasive cardiovascular procedures are performed worldwide each year, and this number is expected to increase further with the aging of the population. The vast majority of these procedures are performed by means of retrograde femoral artery access, with a minority of lower limb revascularization procedures exploiting an antegrade femoral approach.
