Tubeless Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy: A New Standard in Percutaneous Renal Surgery

The practice of placing a nephrostomy tube after percutaneous renal surgery has been questioned for many years. From initial reports by Wickham and associates in 1984 and our institution's early experience in the 1990s to the several series recently published, the tubeless percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) has been repeatedly tested and proven. There are clear indications to use a nephrostomy tube after percutaneous renal surgery; these indications, however, are fewer and far between as advances in percutaneous endoscopy are made.
