New Zealand is threatened by invasion of the glassy-winged sharpshooter, Homalodisca vitripennis (Germar) (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae), an important vector of Xylella fastidiosa, it gram-negative bacterium that causes Pierce's disease ill grape (Vitis spp,) and scorch diseases ill many other horticultural crops.
