ED Charge Nurse Workshop: Queen for a Day: One Hospital's Answer to Orienting Nurses to the Charge Role

In an effort to foster staff development, the emergency department of Englewood Hospital and Medical Center implemented a unit-specific role: nurse educator for the emergency department. L embraced this position after being a staff nurse for 10 years. Because this position was new, I had to start from the beginning. There were no emergency department-specific education plans stored in a secret drawer somewhere, so the wheels of Creativity began to turn. During this ongoing process, a request came from ? the emergency department patient care directors to develop a formalized education plan for our charge nurses. The hospital's Center for Nursing Practice offers a charge nurse course, but it did not capture the specialized needs of an emergency nurse or an emergency department. Because our emergency department utilizes permanent charge nurses, each one possessing distinct yet valuable qualities, a course tailored to the unique practice of emergency nursing was warranted. With assistance from the care manager and the support of our 2 patient care directors, we were able to successfully present an Emergency Department Charge Nurse Workshop to make our group of charge nurses more cohesive in their management styles.
