High prevalence of coinfection with mucosal high-risk type HPV (HR-HPV) and cutaneous HR-HPV in Bowen's disease in the fingers.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection was demonstrated in some of nonmelanoma skin cancers including squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), verrucous carcinoma, as well as precan-cerous lesions including epidermodysplasia verruciformis (EV), Bowen's disease (BD) and bowenoid papulosis. HPVs are group of DNA viruses, which can infect any epithelia, and divided into two subclasses: high-risk HPV and low-risk HPV. High-risk HPV (HR-HPVs) are found in malignancy of skin and mucosa. BD and SCC in the genital area are generally considered to be associated with mucosal HR-HPVs, similar to in cervical cancer. Currently, more than 100 types of HPVs have been discovered. Approximately 40 species of HPVs are of mucosal type. Among mucosal HR-HPVs, HPV16 and 18 are known as major causal factors for cervical cancer. Recent studies have shown that mucosal HR-HPVs are related to the development of extra genital BD [1]. There have been some reports on cutaneous epidermodysplasia verruciformis (EV) HPV infection in extra genital BD [2,3]. While more than 20 types of EV HPVs are known, cutaneous cancers are predominantly associated with HPV types 5 and 8, much less frequently with HPV types 14, 17, 20 and 47 [4].
