摘要

Among the many scenic places in China are the water villages, or water towns, which date back several hundred years, or even more than a thousand years. Several of these villages are located in the Yangtze River delta and are close to the 3 big cities: Shanghai, Suzhou, and Hangzhou. They are known for their rustic charm and well-preserved historic quaint houses of not more than 3 stories, gardens of previous wealthy merchants and high officials, waterways and abundant wood, and stone bridges of varied design. They are the "Venice of the Orient." Some of the houses were renovated or rebuilt during the last dynasty of China, the Qing Dynasty. Life in these water villages seems to have stood still.
