All Bowen's disease is squamous cell carcinoma in situ, but all squamous cell carcinoma in situ is not Bowen's disease.

The purpose of this letter is to clarify our opinion as to the proper use of the term Bowen's disease. For many years, the term has been used incorrectly, in our opinion, as being synonymous with squamous cell carcinoma in situ (SCGIS). Bowen's disease represents a form of SCCIS, and very few examples in the current era fit the clinical-pathologic description by Dr John T. Bowen.1 SCGIS is seen in various clinical scenarios and with a number of microscopic variations.
