Don't sweat the small stuff... (or don't sweat the wrong stuff)

We in dermatopathology, collectively, are perhaps too prone to fret about minor variations in conventional microscopic findings. (This phenomenon of anxiety over something potentially insignificant may afflict colleagues in surgical pathology as well, but the mindset of the dermatopathologist holds the greatest familiarity to yours truly.) At times, the significance of certain tiny findings may be writ large in our diagnostic thinking, yet it remains extremely challenging to determine what is of authentic (or crucial) diagnostic importance and what is merely background noise.
