The knitwear industry in India has completed 100 years recently. Today the industry, mainly concentrated in Ludhiana and Tirupur, is in upbeat mood as the diversified exports showing signs of greater revival of demand and the industry is in for good times ahead. At present there are about 6000 hosiery units in Ludhiana alone. This industry is using various types of knitting and making-up machines from traditional flat knitting machines to computerised versions. However, the old hand-flat knitting machine is still the base of production.
