Effect of organic and inorganic source of nutrients on cotton productivity and nutrient use efficiency under irrigated condition.

A field experiment was conducted during 2001-03 in Hisar, Haryana, India, to investigate the effect of organic (farmyard manure (FYM) at 5 and 10 t/ha, and daincha [Sesbania] incorporation at 45 days after sowing) and inorganic sources of nutrients on cotton productivity and nutrient use efficiency. The recommended dose (RD) of N was 80 kg/ha, of P was 30 kg/ha, and of NPK was 80:30:30 kg/ha. Plant height, number of bolls per plant and boll weight were significantly affected by the different combinations of organic and inorganic sources of nutrients. The highest seed cotton yield (2698.67 kg/ha) was observed where 50% of the RDF+10 t FYM/ha+foliar spray of urea (2%) was applied. The effect of RDF of NP on seed cotton yield was statistically on the par with RD of NPK. However, the nutrient use efficiency was higher in RD of NP. The effect of RD of NPK+5 t FYM/ha on seed cotton yield and nutrient use efficiency was statistically on the par with RD of NPK+10 t FYM/ha. The seed cotton yield and nutrient use efficiency were increased with the combined application of organic and inorganic source of nutrients. Higher yield was observed when the dose of chemical fertilizers was reduced to 50%, FYM was applied at 10 t/ha and was further increased with foliar spray of urea.
