Asthma is one of the leading chronic diseases of children in the Western world. Although usually associated with atopy, asthma is a heterogeneous and genetically complex disease caused by multiple genetic and environmental factors. Interaction of these factors may play an important role in determining the characteristics of asthma throughout childhood.
